Hothouse, a self portrait by AOLAB,NOLA/ MAY2012

I’ve been quiet in here for the past few weeks. Today was an intense day for me, so for you…and for me…i introduce a bit of…levity.

This shot was staged after vividly imagining running out into the sweltering New Orleans “is it really this hot already?damn!” heat in my undyrs and a kimono at the sound of an ice cream truck, flipping off the kids i knocked down to reach it first, then taking some kid’s ice cream cone before the Lord in Heaven made me give it back.

i said IMAGINING, people lol.

i promise no kids were harmed prior to this shoot, over anything as arbitrary as a strawberry shortcake ice cream on a…nevermind.

editor’s note:only after writing this out did the A’c up in the attic begin to work all the way, instead of punk-assed gusts now and then. i dont really know what to do with that one lol. Maybe demented humor really IS the answer to Everything lol.

PLAY by Angel Brynner

GOTTA SAY

THAT THIS IS CLASSIC

WOMAN WHAT

YOU PUT ME THRU

EVERYTIME

YOU’RE SO DAMN SPASTIC

NEVER KNOW

WHAT YOU GONE DO

LUCKILY

I’M SO ELASTIC

& I

FIT AROUND YOU

ALLATIME

I SAY THAT I QUIT

BUT I CANT

GET OFF OF YOU

…and how you play

…your silly way…

its how you play…

that makes me stay

YESTERDAY

WAS SO FANTASTIC

YOU GAVE

ME ALL OF YOU

SUDDENLY

YOU GO ALL CLASSIC

NEVER KNOW

WHAT YOU GONE DO

QUIETLY

YOU GET “EXOTIC”

BABY, WHAT

IS WRONG WITH YOU?

LUCKILY

ITS SO EROTIC

GOTTA SAY

I’M SCARED OF YOU

…and how you play

what can i say

and everyday

different way…

[for the verses: it’s a deep short bass groove under it all three chords then four again & again, with the drums primarily just that stomping kickdrum thing at a simple march [1234],but then jess johnson guitar tickling is playing across the top of it.the guy is muttering, drawling, aggravated, yet really more aggravated at being aroused BY what he’s bitching about]

[for the chorus it sounds almost like David Bowie yelling Fame, but with the horns more earth wind & fire meets a black college marching band, even almost to the yell/hoot in Shining Star. & when it flips back to the verse it the way the drums do on bawa when we see the set-up aww cutekid shot]

[then for the bridge its just like a p-funk jam session crossed with like a second line but during the sunday social club ones thru the year through the territories, not mardi gras-like the traveling street party sound but set across once again a black college marching band systematic type kind of arrangement-like playing the classic then  the conductor going”Take me to tha bridge!” oleschool style & the musicians just losing it wagging all kinds of ish while they’re going off dancing to the battlefield. think like a clean-lined “Garage Stomp” in full house-real simple sonar anchor, mofos wilding out across it, words not necessary, this bridge is fo’ dancin purposes onleh lol]

GOTTA SAY

THIS IS QUIXOTIC

YOU SAY

I DO IT TOO

YOU SAY

ITS ME WHO TAUGHT IT

ITS WHAT

I’VE DONE TO YOU

AND OF COURSE

I’M SO NEUROTIC

NEVER KNOW

IT MIGHT BE TRUE

MAYBE THATS

WHATS SO HYPNOTIC

AND WHAT’S

WITH ME AND YOU

…its how we..play

most everyday

its how we play

it is our way…

PLAY by angel brynner.

written May 12,2012. New Orleans.830 am.

due to hearing these bass riffs in head & this guitar picking sexily egging it on until i couldnt lay down no more.

the scene this goes down alongside is hiLarious.

mah children are still sleeping on this saturday morn, unaware their moms has cut in bangs so she can see lolol, but their lil butts are wagging happily in the air as the “house” shakes from the stomp of the bass & drums.

Hive & Swarm, illustrations commissioned from AOLAB by Nola Woodworks for the Audubon Insectarium, NOLA, AOLAB2012

Just got back from installing the nola woodworks tables that i got commissioned to do illustrations across for the Audubon Insectarium here in New Orleans.

Hive & Swarm, respectively.

For the kiddie “you want me to eat what?!lookitthabees, arethosekillerbees, maybejustcarpenter,or honey, oh look theresa-omghowmany?!?!tharooftharoof,tharoofisonfiyah!!” ……party area:”D

…a fun, simple, short & sweet project that i am grateful for being pulled in to participate in by nothing but goofy grace.

May the kids…at their inaugural birthday party….tomorrow…beat the sNot out of these babies, and may children who’ve never needed ritalin…be sequestered due to mah bees inciting them to go batshit craycray as they eat worms in a controlled environ :”D I’m soooo in love with God right now for this one lolol

WARCRY by Angel Brynner

baby just walk with me

i’m really not afraid of your shadow

baby just walk with me

i’m gonna get you thru this battle

baby just stick with me

we’re gonna make it thru this battle

&even as you walk with me

remember we are in his shadow

[repeat 12 twelve times, slowly] said at the same slow meditative pace again &again, very deeply. with lil kids all “ahhh~”irsh glen style in the background, over rolling roaring waves of layered eerie orchestral sound. this guitar picks across it almost like arabesques, counterpointing the pedantic rhythm of the voice softly through the storm of sound-then storm dies down[ as one pushes through to the center of it.
now guy sings at the same higher register[not falsetto-still manly]as the guitar across the calm in the midst of storm &instead of b4,now the guitar underscores the words said in that register for the bridge{like a guy on his knees in front of a child, consoling&assuring her}:
dont run away
dont cry
you’re not afraid
&neither am i
you know its time
&God is on your side~
(the guitar picks at same pace [at “dont cry” & so on,louder version of guys voice])
dont be afraid
dont try
i understand
what i see in your eye
i know you’re mine
& we’ll be…just…-fine~
then a repeat of that, still softly, almost a mandolin/banjo sound to the picking variations on that theme music grows back to more crescendoey ominous as his encouragement cloaks/gears her to burst back out
its gonna fade
no lie
i understand
the look in your eye
its all on the line-
and its time to …ride
into the final repeat of the chorus/meditation[which is the whole song, wordwise],except she’s singing it w/him, her voice rising up out of the angelic irishglen voices still anchoring the storm in the backgroundof the symphony-this lil kid repeating what you’ve been singing to her the whole time.

baby just walk with me

i’m really not afraid of your shadow

baby just walk with me

i’m gonna get you thru this battle

baby just stick with me

we’re gonna make it thru this battle

&even as you walk with me

remember we are in his shadow

until it gets to the final part& you & the child both keep resinging

remember we are in his shadow
remember we are in his shadow
remember we are in his shadow
(as the sounds start to ebb-)
remember we are in his shadow
remember we are in hi shadow
remember we are in his shadow
& eventually your voice drops away & its just the kid voice, but strongly, flinty.then she stops.takes a breath on tape & music drops all the way away & she says it again-
remember we are in his shadow.
then the kids voices join in chanting last line forcefully[another brick inthe wallstyle].
remember we are in his shadow
remember we are in his shadow
remember we are in his shadow
remember we are in his shadow
remember we are in his shadow
remember we are in his shadow

I’m hearing Lenny Kravitz’s voice singing this with the kid, but in a way that he has never sung before.Like if he was to go bauhaus/dead can dance vein & mess w/it or something-its really intense.beautiful. the books are pleased this morning.
